How it all works...

Most people don't fully understand how their septic system operates.

It's important to know the "do's and don'ts"... so here's a quick lesson in Septic 101.

Your septic tank does not act as a fuel tank...where it's either full or empty - it acts as more of a trap for solids.

  • 1.)

Solids & liquids come out of the house and enter your septic tank...

  • 2.)

...when this happens, sludge begins to form on the bottom, and a scum layer forms on the top of this liquid waste.

  • 3.)

All liquid waste is sent to the septic drain field where it's then dispersed throughout the field, and into the ground through clean stone & sand.

  • 4.)

When the scum layer on the top and the sludge layer on the bottom of the tank gets too thick...

  • 5.)

...solids will start getting forced into your field, out through your tank's outlet.

  • 6.)

This causes an assortment of problems and leads to failures.

To prevent failures, it's recommended to clean your tank every 2-3 years.
